White Horse Farm, Hockliffe - 4 2 and 3 bed houses
Previously a farmhouse & stables, this small courtyard in Hockliffe was converted into a series of 2 & 3 bedroomed properties. The farmhouse is a grade II listed building and so the conversions had to be sympathetic to the historical context of the site and the work had to be carried out to enhance the setting of the buildings. For this reason many of the original features have been retained or if replaced, are in keeping with the original buildings.
The conversion of the house entailed replacing the ground floor and some of the internal partitions and introducing a new staircase to the first floor, which itself was retained in full. The roof was stripped down to the original structure which was strengthened before the original roof covering was reinstated.
The conversion of the stables retained the original brick plinths and timber frame which was re-clad with stained boarding. Internally the rooms replicate the original stable layout and the roof has been exposed in some areas to increase to feeling of space.
Home Farm Barn, Downhead Park, Milton Keynes - 6 bedroomed house
This property was one of the original farm barns and being in Milton Keynes, its preservation was an integral part of the development of this area. It was also treated as a listed building by virtue of the fact that the original farmhouse adjacent was grade II listed.
The conversion of the barn entailed removal of the old tin roof and raising the walls to allow a second floor to be installed in the roof space. Internally the spaces reflect the large glazed openings in either side of the building (originally the full height barn doors) where a single space rises to the full height of the roof.
In keeping with the barns humble origins, detailing remains simple and new fenestration is kept to a minimum.
